This summer, many teachers from Ironia, and a few from other schools, joined together for a book study of “Teach Like a Pirate,” by Dave Burgess.
In brainstorming ideas, the Vocabulary Parade came to us as a hook for improving vocabulary in student writing. It was something we'd done a few times when I was at Fernbrook. The group thought it was also a great way to be student-centered, allowing children to select words that were meaningful to them. Mr. Kricheff and Mr. Rathjen, as well as the whole Ironia staff, were very receptive.
The Vocabulary Parade was a big success, with students and teachers displaying a wide variety of challenging words and interesting idioms. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot. I hope we can do it again next year.
